Three colossal limestone arches — the tallest around 200 metres — span a lost-world gorge of green cliffs and hanging mist, connected by a walkway along the canyon floor. A glass elevator drops you in; the walk out is gentle. Roughly 2.5 hours from the city and worth every kilometre.
Between the 9th and 13th centuries, sculptors carved tens of thousands of Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian figures into the cliffs around Dazu. The Baodingshan crescent is the highlight — a golden, thousand-armed Guanyin and a 31-metre reclining Buddha among scenes of startling everyday life.
